Deep Venous Thrombosis

People who travel for long distances using flights are at increased of developing deep venous thrombosis (DVT) because of being sedentary for extended hours. In DVT, blood forms in the veins located within the body tissues (Bartholomew & Evans, 2019). DVT affects the legs leading to swelling. Long flights mean sitting in a confined space for long without the opportunity to move about. This affects the circulation of blood by preventing it from flowing back to the heart. The resultant effect of a blood clot on the veils because the inability of the blood to travel. In some cases, the clots can travel through the right heart to the vessels supplying blood to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (Bushman, 2019). Pulmonary embolism can be fatal, characterized by coughing blood, chest pain, and difficulties breathing. If not treated promptly, it can cause death because it causes blockage. Some people are more exposed to DVT than others because of genetics, recent surgery, restricted mobility, old age, or people with obesity (CDC, 2022).

People who are travelling over long distances need to take care of themselves so that they do not develop DVT. One

way of preventing DVT during long flights includes moving frequently on the aisle to enable blood flow. Similarly, pumping the feet by stretching the heel helps in lifting the calf to allow blood flow which prevents chances of a blood clot (Bartholomew & Evans, 2019). Shawn should also avoid closing his legs while seated to enable proper blood flow. Additionally, he should take lots of fluids, especially water to avoid dehydration. Dehydration and a limited supply of oxygen in the plane exacerbate the risk of a blood clot.
