In terms of actual memberships in professional organizations, the number of members is actually quite small compared to the total number of licensed nurses in the profession. What do you believe contributes to lack of participation from nurses in these organizations?

After reading and also listening to my nursing mentors I have heard that it is beneficial for nurses to become a part of a professional organization. I myself am not yet a member of any professional organization I have not had time to sit and truly get into the nuts and bolts of an organization. I also believe lack of knowledge is another deterrent, and also being a part of an organization has a monthly fee some nurses may not see the benefits of paying a monthly fee.

According to multiple association surveys, many prospective members do not believe that membership is worth the cost. Accordingly, researchers found that roughly 18% do not join professional organizations due to a lack of information.

In addition, many students entering the nursing profession are confused about what local, regional, or national organizations to join (ensync-corp 2023).

Great point regarding lack of knowledge on professional organizations. There are also so many (a good thing) and some may have difficulty identifying an organization that is a good fit.

  Barriers to licensed nurses joining professional organizations are probably tiered and multifaceted. Some nurses may not be aware of the benefits of joining professional organizations, such as access to continuing education, networking opportunities, and advocacy support.

work long and demanding hours, leaving us with limited time and energy to engage in extracurricular activities like participating in professional organizations. Balancing work, family responsibilities, and personal life can make it difficult for nurses to engage in such organizations. In an economic and cultural environment that requires balancing multiple demands, professional associations need to consider the limited time available to nurses and examine ways to provide professional development opportunities that are more easily accessible (Alotaibi, 2007).

Lastly, I would say the perceived idea of limited relevance: Some nurses may perceive certain professional organizations as not directly relevant to their specific area of practice or career goals. If they do not see a clear benefit from joining, they may be less motivated to become members.

Great points, Troy. If there is a good understanding of CEUs and professional development (something we all understand as a nurse, we need) there would be greater interest.

I personally have not joined a professional nursing organization because I never knew the benefits about joining one. I believe that majority of the nurses does not know much about the organizations. As stated by (enSYNC, 2022), “According to multiple association surveys, many prospective members do not believe that membership is worth the cost. Accordingly, researchers found that roughly 18% do not join professional organizations due to a lack of information.” Another reason would be the long hours nurses work, and do not have the energy to join an organization, and attend meetings because it is very important for nurses to look after their mental health. As stated by (enSYNC, 2022), “Without a doubt, nursing is one of the most challenging occupations. Long hours, patient care demands, and emotional stress can cause numerous mental and physical issues that extend beyond the workplace. In addition, many nurses struggle to achieve a healthy work-life balance. According to a survey published in Rehabilitation Nursing, many nurses decline to join associations due to family responsibilities and lack of time.”

Time commitments do impact our abilities to join professional organizations. The benefits, if time can be found, are tremendous.

My own understanding of the challenge of either enrolling new members or retaining old members is attributed to time constraint and knowledge management. With the growing inflation, one source of income is not enough and which i believe that 36 hours a week on the floor cannot address. So most nurses seek complementary incomes to the one they have to be able to sustain the lifestyle they aspire. In that way, they are at a disadvantage of time.

The other one reason for small membership in the organizations is the knowledge management. Balzinski and Wilson ( 2023) states that one of the reason for reluctance to join a professional group is the inability to have free access to online education, activities , or specialty group which competes fee based continuing education the organization may offer.
