Various elements contribute to the nursing shortage in the US. The first element is the enhancement of medical care leading to prolonged life. Although this is a laudable thing, it equally implies that the lifespan of people increases resulting in the need for more care as they age. Unfortunately, the nursing workforce is insufficient to address the needs of older people with prolonged life due to advancements in healthcare. The other element is the growth in the population of Baby Boomers. As this biggest generation in the US continues to age, it implies more healthcare needs by this population. Also, the Baby Boomer nurses are retiring and are not replaced proportionally by new nurses (Marć et al., 2019). The third element is high turnover rates by nurses due to numerous reasons including work burden, stress and burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and family issues. The last element is limited resources to educate new nurses (Spurlock Jr, 2020). This is attributed to the reduced number of facilities in nursing schools including scarcity of classrooms and nurse faculty leading to the enrolment of fewer nursing students.

One way to resolve the nursing shortage is through the implementation of preceptorship and residency programs. These programs are essential in improving critical thinking, and practical, technical, and communication skills needed in the modern healthcare system (McInnis et al., 2021). The primary objective of the preceptorship program is to assist the newly employed nurses to adjust to their responsibilities, developing critical thinking, and socializing them in their respective units. The residency program on its side seeks to develop clinical leadership, decision-making skills, and incorporate research into nursing practice and minimize nursing burnout. Taken together, preceptorship and residency programs can address the nursing shortage by enhancing nursing competency and ensuring the proper retention of nursing practitioners.

There are several reasons for the nursing shortage such as, nurse burnout, aging nurses , new nurses unable to handle the patient workload, high stress levels and more. Nursing schools are aware of the shortage but unfortunately there are not enough nursing faculty to service the potential nursing students. The patient is the most important individual to the health care organization and they deserve quality care. When nurses have higher education and multi-skilled they can effectively combat the health care workforce and essentially care for more patients. A common objective of health care providers and health organizations is to provide safe, effective quality care therefore, adequate nursing staff is vital. Decreased staffing is a huge contributor to the nurse stress level which may cause their work performance levels to become compromised and job dis-satisfaction occurs leading to more nurses leaving nursing altogether. Quality of patient care is decreased when access to health care is affected by nurse stressors or nurse burnout (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017).

The shortage of nurses is caused by numerous factors such nurses nearing retirement age, shortage of school nursing faculty, nurse stress levels due to staffing issues and decreased job satisfaction (Whitney, 2018). The AACN reports that in 2018-2019 nursing schools turned away 75,000 qualified students due to the lack of faculty, clinical sites, classroom space, and clinical preceptors (Rosseter, 2019). There has been several nursing schools that have popped up throughout Arizona, but Maricopa Community College (MCC) is the one that stands out to me, they partner with several university’s offering ADN-BSN degree programs, ADN programs, specialty training for current licensed nurses interested in critical care field (ICU, ED, etc.), and market to high school students near graduation. I went through the MMC system and now my eldest daughter is currently working towards her BSN through MCC/Upper Iowa University program. In addition to MCC providing quality education, it’s reasonably priced allowing my daughter to have little to no school dept upon graduation, which is another factor to consider, some of these pop up schools are attempting to charge 50,000 dollar for an associate’s degree in nursing making unreasonable and unaffordable.

responsibilities involving patient care. Causes related to nursing shortage are numerous. Nursing workforce is aging. According to Haddad (2022), there is currently approximately one million registered nurses older than 50 years, meaning one third of the workforce could be at retirement age in the next 10 to 15 years. Moreover, many nurses are scheduled many hours with lots of patients inorder to cover for the shortages. This can lead to more stress and lower levels of job satisfaction. This unsafe staffing ratio results in nurses leaving bedside hence fewer nurses to take care of patients. Also, current nurses feel pressure and strain and opt out. Some nurses graduate and start working then determine the profession is not what they thought it would. Others may work for a while and experience burnout and leave the profession (Gandi, Wai, Karick, 2011). Advancement in modern care that prolong life means that people live longer than before needing more care as they age. Nursing workforce is not large enough to handle the people who live longer due to better health care. Furthermore, as new technology in healthcare advances, there will be shortage of registered nurses who understand and can work with new technology.

 

Shortage of nursing school faculty is restricting nursing program enrollment to all interested student (White, 2018). This further limits the number of nurses a nursing school can generate. Decreased and limited faculty can cause fewer students and overall quality of the program and classes can decline. Since majority of nurses are females so during child bearing age, nurses will cut back or leave the profession altogether. To prevent nursing shortages , facilities are adopting improved staffing policies and higher wages. Others can even offer incentives programs for qualifying nurses including loan repayment programs, scholarships and tax credits.
