Plagiarism is trying to pass off someone else academic work as your own without giving proper credit/citation to the original writer. Plagiarism sometimes it can be intentional or other times it can be the citation is not correct. LopesWrite can be used to check for plagiarized material by looking at the similarity score for example a similarity score of 30% means that only 70 % is your work and 30 % is another author you has the option to go back and check by proper citation this can be done multiples of times until you reach an acceptable similarity score which is generally below 15 % of less. students can avoid plagiarism by summarizing, paraphrasing or using quotation marks to indicate the original author. Summarizing is basically rewriting to original author work in your own words but still retains the same message.

There are different types of plagiarism and sometimes people do not have intentions or have no idea that they committed plagiarism. Such as not citing correct references is a form of plagiarism. This does not apply to just writing papers but also images, music or videos. Lopeswrite is a great tool to ensure there is no plagiarism in the submitted content. Plagiarism is often thought to be the intentional stealing of others’ work, but it can be unintentional at times. In some cases, the author may fail to follow proper citation guidelines. Although this may not be intentional, it is still plagiarism. To help prevent plagiarism, GCU has given us access to LopesWrite. This resource is very helpful because it tells you the percentage of your paper that is similar to online and academic text; typically, a similarity score of 20% or more is considered plagiarism. Additionally, it will tell you the specific areas of your paper that are too similar to outside sources. LopesWrite also shows the percentage of text that is used within quotation marks. For academic writing, you want to use direct quotes sparingly. A method that I use to avoid plagiarism is to site my sources in the reference list immediately after I plan to use the content. I also proof read my papers prior to submission to make sure everything that is not my own thoughts is cited appropriately.

It helps to check similarity score and it should be less than 20 %. If it is more than 20%, we have the option to rewrite and submit. According to Grand Canyon University (n.d.), it also comprises paraphrasing sources that do not match the student’s original work without the proper acknowledgement. Self-plagiarism is another case where a student reuses their previous work for submission in another section. It is considered literary theft since credit is not given to the owner. Plagiarism contributes to academic dishonesty, which has significant consequences in the GCU community. Irrespective of whether it is intentional or unintentional, it can lead to the withholding of one’s grades.

GCU requires all students to use LopesWrite, the plagiarism-checking software. LopesWrite is highly effective in preventing plagiarism. Submitting a paper to LopesWrite returns the plagiarism score. GCU Technical Support (n.d.) states that it returns the similarity score indicating what should be revised, partcularly when the score is more than 20%. An additional method that can be used to prevent plagiarism is writing using one’s own words. This means that one should minimize paraphrasing whenever possible. (2022) assert that using one’s thoughts and ideas is the best way to avoid plagiarism. It is crucial to distinguish one’s work from an original source. Even when translated from a different language, it still is someone else’s work and must be cited. Besides, where direct quotes must be used, it is important to use quotation marks.

Plagiarism in academic institutions is not a new problem for higher education service provider.
