I learned a lot during this 8 week course that gave me better understanding of why the hospice company that I worked for struggled so much. Having management that is not able to embrace change has crippled them in several ways. I really hope that they can get a director in there that is a leader, who will help to get the company back on track and growing because I believe that they provide awesome, compassionate patient care, and the staff that they currently have deserves better than they are getting under current management. I enjoyed learning about change management and the use of change theory to manage ongoing change. In the last week, researching project management strategies for the paper, also helped me to understand that implementing new ideas requires active and ongoing effort in managing the people involved and their responses to the change in their workload. Change shouldn’t just happen, it needs to be actively sought and managed, and as an advanced practice nurse and educator I will need to teach my students this concept. I look forward to using what I have learned. I can’t think of a question that went unanswered, thank you Dr. Aaron for your guidance in this class.

I have obtained a lot of information over the past eight weeks. The most important lesson that I have learned is how important technology is in the healthcare field. Change is inevitable, but the importance of technology is crucial. I often wonder how effective patient care would be today without computers and electronic health records. EPIC charting has allergy notifications that alert you before a drug is given. Patients often come to the holding area before surgery, and many often leave out drugs they are allergic to or can’t think of the name. I simply repeat the meds from the list in the chart. During paper charting, we had to write down what the patient told us. Electronic charting allows for the decrease in “near misses” or sentinel events.  Effective leadership is also important in nursing. Departments can fail drastically without a knowledgeable leader. I learned it’s a certain approach to take while implementing change in a department, and I plan to use some of these leadership styles when working as an advanced practice nurse. I can’t think of any questions, as I have obtained a plethora amount of knowledge from this class. Thanks Dr.Aaron for providing us with a great amount of knowledge.

Dr. Aaron thank you for your time and effort. I think the most important thing I learned is the immense volume of digital information that is collected. When thinking about that it amazes me that we are only collecting a small amount of data off all the healthcare that is provided in this country. With all this data fragmented and stored in various locations with limited integration how does one perceive that all this info will be merged so practitioners can have access to the information. Imagine all this information under one umbrella, how will it be sorted. Artificial intelligence (AI) will have to be refined to sort through the data for pertinent pieces of information. Just contemplating the complexity involved joggles the mind. We as a class have not discussed is where is the line, how much is to much. I understand the value of technology however technology like Elon Musk neuralink has the potential for nefarious use. Technology is advancing so quickly I hope we are always able to one step ahead of it and not get run over it like a steam roller.

Over the past eight weeks, I have learned the importance of the advanced practice nurse in the leadership position of informatics within an organization. The informatics nurse acts as a liaison between the act of nursing documentation and the nursing care provided. Nurses at this level assist with managing reports that collect data on patient throughput, medication documentation, and setting policies and procedures for using critical laboratory values and high-risk medications. Due to the course providing literature on Press Ganey and HCCAPS, I have a better understanding of the process of evaluating patient satisfaction. As technology continues to advance, I cannot help but hope we do not lose the art of the human touch in the nursing profession.

Great point regarding one not losing the human touch with the advancements of technology. We should never

become so advanced technologically that we become so limited in our touch. We cannot let technology overtake the humanness and caring behaviors of the nursing discipline.

I have learned a ton the past eight weeks. My biggest takeaway, is that technology can be a double edged sword. While it is required for the advancement of healthcare and providing better patient care and making it more affordable, technology as we know doesn’t come without faults. It is up to us as well as our leaders to embrace the changes that accompany healthcare, if we are not able to it can lead to the faltering of a unit or facility as a whole. Change is inevitable.

I have gained a lot of information over the past eight weeks. One of the lessons that I have learned is the importance of technology to the healthcare system. There have been new advances and new upgrades in technology, making healthcare more accessible to communities and individuals who are not able to attend in-patient clinics. The value of Nursing Informatics is vital to nursing care. The advancement of technology has made research and new treatment modalities better by delivering safe, quality patient care. First, after an investigation, you would have to revisit the Doctor’s office to review the results. There are new ways to get information at your fingertips, such as Electronic Health records and mobile apps.

The nurse is responsible for ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential in accordance with HIPPA regulations where such regulations are applicable. Keeping detailed records is especially essential while working with technological systems.

The information I acquired regarding Google Glass and Proteogenomics has piqued my interest.

I have found this class to be both a blessing and a curse. It has forced me to travel outside of my comfort zone as I am somewhat technologically challenged but, it has also opened my eyes to a method and style of nursing specialty that I didn’t know existed. I appreciated learning about how technology affects healthcare and how the projected course of healthcare delivery is augmented and changed with emerging technologies, i.e. Google Glass. However, learning about the different leadership styles and techniques and how they influence the care team was the most important topic to me. Learning how to be an effective leader will help me become a better nurse educator.

Thank you for your time and dedication to this course.

I think the most important information I received in this class is the value of informatics. There is so much available to healthcare providers and patients. It is already amazing how informatics interact with providers, staff, and patients. In 10 years where are we going be? The last assignment made me understand how much goes into implementing an electronic health record. The time it takes and the process. One thing it did not say, or I did not find is the cost that goes into implementation and purchasing the software. I enjoyed the class interaction and learned a lot about specific technology and how it fits into practice.

I learned so much from this class, and I thank you, Dr. Aaron, for the last eight weeks. I appreciate more about technology and electronic health records. Telehealth has been one of the topics that caught my attention, and how it has become significant in today’s healthcare setting. In this class, I learned to perform my first PowerPoint presentation and do the voiceover. I enjoyed sharing information regarding technology in the healthcare setting, different nursing experiences that this class has been through, and how we incorporate this knowledge into our daily practice. Thank you so much!
