The technology is recommended by some health guidelines, such as the health insurance portability and accountability act, and has been proven effective.

Additionally, this technology is essential since it provides a clear outline of patient information. Based on the standards related to the HER, the main focus of such measures is to protect patient’s data without their consent, which involves legal and ethical principles that affect professionals. This technology helps access evidence-based tools that help make patient care decisions. Confidentiality issues about patients’ information are some of the key areas that ought to be considered. Therefore, according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, it is required that information related to parents is confidential (Tang., et al., 2019). This implies that no one can release their data to unauthorized individuals without seeking the patient’s consent.

Electronic Health Record is a vital communication technology that enhances the coordination of quality care by an interprofessional team since it provides a systematic evaluation of different healthcare professionals’ diagnoses. Additionally, treatment performance can be easily tracked, especially when an individual makes an error during service delivery. Compared to the paper-based method, this technology contains an audit log that provides evidence of malpractice (Tang., et al., 2019). Therefore, it is easy to coordinate between interprofessional, especially when a team is on shift. It takes over after an individual becomes easy. Tracking the bills after diagnosis and treatment becomes less costly.

You mentioned that the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) may be used to help improve communication. Davenport and Kalakota (2019) reported that due to the complexity and rise of data use in health care, AI (i.e., machine learning, natural language processing, physical robots) will be used more often within the field. Several types of AI applications are being used, such as diagnosis and treatment recommendations, patient engagement and adherence, and administrative activities (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019). The AI that I am most familiar with is the physical robotics that are being used in the pharmacy to dispense medications. The pharmacy robots are used to ensure accuracy by counting pills and bottles, labeling prescription vials, to store medications, and to access patient data. They operate on vertical and horizontal rails and they are programmed to retrieve medications and deposit them into patient-specific bins. I was in awe the first time I saw the pharmacy robotic at work. We must keep in mind, that AI applications are only as good as the information that they are given, so there is a large human component to the use of AI.

 

Although AI is used frequently and has great promise for its use in health care, what about ethical concerns.

Open and transparent communication is critical for the effective functioning of the interprofessional team and the delivery of safe patient care. One way communication technologies can enhance the coordination of care by interprofessional teams is through the EMR (electronic medical record) within the Cerner system. Areas of use are the physician’s plan of care to communicate the patient’s current test, labs, or discharge plan. In contrast, the situational awareness area is used for nursing communication of events for the care team and providers. Both of these areas are available as the patient’s record is open and eliminate the need to troll through the chart for this information. Another area of communication is CPOES this has removed the need for written orders are often very difficult to read because handwriting varies, and this may cause errors. This allows the clinical staff to correctly follow orders safely to provide the patient with quality care (DeNisco, 2021). This CPOES area also clearly lists consults ordered, health care proxy activation orders, and discharge instructions for aftercare. The new standard of care is communication between the healthcare team using an interoperability system.

Technology has had a profound impact on improving the ability for the interprofessional health care team’s ability to communicate. Communication modalities that have been influenced by technology include portable devices, electronic health records (EHR), and telehealth. Telehealth is the use of technology to bridge geography by allowing patients and health care providers communicate from separate geographical areas. As an example, in California a practitioner may be out of state but must be licensed in California and have other endorsements to bill Medi-Cal (Department of Health Care Services, 2023). This modality was difficult for me to adapt to. Previously, I was an emergency room (ER) staff nurse in a certified stroke center. This organization used Tele-neuro to better serve the surrounding community.  It was a strange adjustment learning how to use this device. Assisting the neurologist while communicating through a portable computer is one-way technology continues to enhance communication between health care professionals.  Over time the process became less cumbersome but we were always concerned that the device would fail. I never had that experience but I am sure someone will.

Effective and efficient communication is vital in any area of healthcare to ensure prudent patient care is provided. In the Emergency and Trauma Departments where I work, this is something we are constantly trying to improve upon. Communication technologies that are constantly being invented can improve this care by all healthcare professionals. “Communication systems promote interaction among healthcare providers and between providers and patients. Examples of communication systems include call light systems, wireless telephones, pagers, email, and instant messaging, which have traditionally been forms of communication targeted at clinicians (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).” After the implementation of the new EHR system, EPIC, at our hospital last year, we quickly found a function called secure chat. The secure chat can be used to send secure messages through the patient’s chart to other members of the patient’s team. This has been a great function to have in the ED, especially when the physician and nurse are running around and they don’t have to wait to try and find the other, however it does have its pitfalls as well. Privacy issues can be a concern with any electronic message sent, everything is discoverable so team members need to be careful what they type, additionally there is a risk that the other person does not see your message right away which can be concerning if its urgent.
