Three takeaways from this article for me were:

There are three different types of investigative projects that include research, evidence-based implementation, and quality improvement. An important aspect of the literature review is making sure the article has been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal so that it can be trusted as more reliable since it has been reviewed by academic experts. Lastly, if not much research is found on a topic, you can start by changing your search words, broadening the population in question, or talking to a librarian for help with research.

Two questions I have after reading the article are:

Where to check that a journal is actually peer-reviewed? How long should an adequate literature review be?

Lastly, one thing I enjoyed was how the article pointed out how many nurses believe literature reviews/investigative projects are for academic scholars, not for nurses that work directly with patients. However, the article goes on to explain that this is a false belief because nurses need to be up-to-date on current research since practices are always evolving and changing.

Information and communication technology can play a vital role in improving the delivery of healthcare services to populations when using vaccinnes. IT can be utilized in improving communication between the healthcare providers and the patients, streamlining the vaccination process, and increasing efficiency. The Electronic medical records can be utilized in integrating the vaccination process. EMRs can be used for tracking patient vaccination status, and ensuring that they are up to date with their vaccination and providing reports of any adverse effects. The systems can also be used in scheduling appointments, setting reminders and tracking the vaccine inventory (Sutton et al., 2020). This greatly helps in improving the efficiency of the vaccination process, reducing wait time and ensuring that patients receive the vaccines that they need at appropriate times. A god example is the case of the covid-19 vaccine where people were reminded to go and get the second jab.

Telehealth technologies can also be implemented as a technique for incorporating technology into vaccination. The technology can be used to reach people that may have difficulties accessing medical services such as people living in rural areas. The services offer can include virtual consultations, video conferencing and remote monitoring (Gupta et al., 2022). Healthcare providers can also utilize these technologies to educate patients and provide them with information about vaccines address their concerns and dispel fear and this can help in improving patient understanding and vaccine compliance.

Technology can also help in improving communication and coordination between the healthcare providers. Healthcare providers can use secure platforms for sharing information especially when dealing with pandemics and outbreaks allowing the healthcare providers to quickly and efficiently respond to changing situations. When considering vaccinations, technology plays and important role in the delivery of vaccines to populations. It is therefore important to integrate technology into healthcare services because it can help ensure people have access to the vaccinations that they need thus they stay healthy and protect the wellbeing of communities.

Evelyn, you made some great points about the positive impact that modern technology can have when dealing with pandemics and disease outbreaks. This made me think about the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when hospital physicians were unsure of what treatments were most effective in treating the virus. I remember hearing about teleconferences held with physicians throughout the country and even throughout the world as the medical community worked together to develop effective treatment plans. I can only imagine that without the use of technology to facilitate this brainstorming the pandemic could have been much worse. I also think that the ability to inform people about the COVID-19 vaccine so quickly through the use of technology helped to increase vaccination rates and decrease the severity of the pandemic. The ability we have now to rapidly share medical information is imperative in stopping pandemics and disease outbreaks either through vaccination programs or preventing the spread of disease.

There is no question that nurses are on the frontline of healthcare on multiple levels. In the arena of pregnancy and postpartum care, nurses play a vital role in not only the assessment of mother and baby’s physical well-being, but mental and emotional well-being as well. Recent studies show that women who are at an increased risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD) can be identified prior to delivery and prior to developing the disorder (Mughal et al., 2022). Quite naturally, nurses are at in the perfect position to identify these women that may be at risk, recommend treatment or support, and maintain follow-up care. Currently, there are screening questionnaires such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) that are commonly completed by women post-delivery, often during the newborn well-check appointments.

Ideally postpartum depression screening would be mandatory across the nation’s healthcare system and completed in intervals starting prior to delivery. Information and communication technologies would be beneficial to providing continuity and consistency to make sure that all women in the country receive, not only assessment and treatment, but also follow-up care, which is extremely important. There should be a national postpartum depression database implemented that is independent of private practices or health systems. For assorted reasons, women often deliver their children under the care of different providers. A nationwide database would ensure that the mother’s PPD history, which can be an indicator of risk for developing PPD with subsequent deliveries, will follow her no matter where she delivers.
