A healthcare program refers to a set of actions established by an organization or government to improve the health outcomes of a population. This paper outlines an interview transcript of my responses to interview questions about the design and implementation of a healthcare program within my practice.   

Interviewer: Tell us about a healthcare program within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program? 

Me: In my current healthcare organization, we have a Teen Mental Health Program established to increase teenagers’ access to mental health services. The program was established in May 2018 and currently has 75 enrollees. The Mental Health program was informed by the increasing incidence of mental health and substance abuse disorders and suicide rates among teenagers in the community. The program offers preventive, curative, and rehabilitative mental health services to reduce the burden of disease attributed to mental health morbidities. It allows teenagers struggling with various life stressors and psychological distress to get into a safe, therapeutic environment to tackle the modern challenges causing them distress. The program is staffed by various professionals with expertise and specialized in dealing with teenage issues, including counselors, mental health practitioners, social workers, and psychologists. 

Interviewer: What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program? 

Me: The program was established at an approximate cost of $ 550,000, including diagnostic materials, screening materials, medical equipment, and health education materials. The program has an annual operational cost of $ 250,000. The program aims to improve teenagers’ mental health and wellbeing, reduce mental health-associated morbidities, and reduce teen suicide rates. Me: As a nurse advocate, I have a role in evaluating the effectiveness of the program’s services and interventions in meeting teenagers’ mental health needs. I also evaluate the program to ascertain that all enrolled persons receive high-quality services and that resources are available for the people who need them most (Gerber, 2018). Besides, I ensure that the interventions are safe to promote patient safety. As a patient advocate, I have to ensure that the care provided to clients is evidence-based, will promote better health outcomes, and not cause harm to the patient (Gerber, 2018). I am actively involved in decision-making about the program’s design due to my knowledge ad experience in mental health. The nurse’s role in design varies from implementation because, in the former, the primary role is to offer expert advice during decision-making and proposing interventions.  However, the implementation entails the nurse putting the proposed interventions into action and evaluating their efficacy in meeting the program’s outcomes (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).  For instance, in the design phase, the nurse proposed mental health prevention interventions such as providing health education on substance abuse and resilience training. In the implementation phase, the nurse executes these interventions and evaluates their efficacy in reducing the incidence of substance abuse among teenagers.  

Interviewer: Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why? 

Me: Implementation of a health program requires contribution from all health professionals involved in patient care. I believe that no profession is superior to the other, and all members of the health team should collaborate in implementing the program to meet the program’s goals. Each member has distinct knowledge and skills based on the profession that can help the team implement best practice interventions and improve patient outcomes (Colizzi, Lasalvia & Ruggeri, 2020).  For example, the implementation of the Teen mental health program requires equal efforts and contributions from all members, including the counselor, mental health practitioner, social worker, and psychologist. The counselor implements primary prevention interventions while the practitioner and psychologist implement secondary and curative interventions. The social worker ensures that teenagers who need these services access them and help them to enroll in the program.
