Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.

- Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.

Hello Hannah great post, you are absolutely right joining a professional nursing organization has a lot of perks and we forget to acknowledge it and don’t know how resourceful these can be. Some join to learn what’s going on and stay current in their field or specialty. Others want to network or enjoy the peer recognition that comes from being an active member of a major organization. (Greggs-McQuilkin, 2005). But I’d like to join American psychiatric nurses association. The fee for students to join is only $25 and it comes with benefits such as scholarships, they provide grants and networking opportunities.(American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2022). Being a member like you said increases knowledge and provides RNs and APRNs the opportunity to provide better patient care.

Your post mentioned the challenge that a nurse’s voice may not be heard within such a large group. As a solution, I recommend that instead of viewing a nurse’s voice as getting lost in the crowd, utilize many nurses with a similar view on policy to encourage legislators to take your expert advice seriously. There is power in numbers. For example, there was a pay freeze, and nurses unionized to ensure the government prioritized their concerns (Lees-Galloway, 2021). If an individual nurse voiced their concerns, the government officials would likely not take their opinion as seriously as they would consider a union’s opinion.
Another challenge you identified is nurses’ lack of knowledge of the correct legislation format. One way to overcome this challenge is education. Nursing education in public policy and policymaking is equally vital as preparation to work in a clinical setting (Oether & Rosa, 2020). Nurses experience first-hand how laws and policy affects the nursing profession as well as patients and communities, it is essential to use this experience to educate legislators on the problems relating to health care and policy.

I enjoyed reading your post and you are right about joining an organization; it is a fantastic opportunity to participate in the policy making process. For example, joining American nursing organization provides a lot of opportunities to meet various nursing leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders. One can represent his/her views by participation. As you mentioned, the challenge of lack of available resources and knowledge can be overcome by participating in conferences and seminars at national and international level. For example, “ICN and WHO are also offering support to create strategies to strengthen leadership skills” and promote nurses’ participation as “modelled by the International Council of Nurses’ Global Nursing Leadership Institute”, which will provide necessary training required for nurses to gain leadership qualities and involve in policies of health care issues (Hajizadeh et al, 2021).
Another challenge that nurses might face is the feeling of unheard, I agree with you. You are right with knowledge we achieve that power. Alos by involving us in representing our views by authoring articles and peer reviewed research participation and serving communities through educating them is another way to get that power of influence. Good leaders are always noticed and have the power to bring change and influence legislation especially when it is about health care (Marymount University).

Before this week’s discussion I was unaware nurses had so many opportunities to participate in policy making. I agree, professional nursing organizations are a fantastic way to be a part of policy making. Professional nursing organizations not only allow nurses to be involved in policy making, but they also take it a step further by preparing them to participate in governance roles (McCorkle et al., 2022). Nurses are key players in addressing health inequalities (Shimek et al., 2022). Nurses’ expertise is being excluded from meetings that are making decisions regarding health care (Shimek et al., 2022). I think your solution to educate current and future nurses about their role in policy making will cause a positive social change in health care. Thanks for sharing your post.
