The selected practice issue is burnout among nurses. Nurses comprise a crucial part of the healthcare workforce, as they are the majority in any healthcare setting. Nurses often face complex challenges in their workplaces that predispose them to burnout. For example, they experience high workloads, poor communication between them and other healthcare providers, and unsafe working conditions that threaten their health (Membrive-Jiménez et al., 2020). Persistent exposure of nurses to stresses leads to burnout. Nurses affected by burnout deliver low quality care due to their demotivation and disengagement in the care process. They also experience emotional challenges that predispose them to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Burnout leads to poor staff retention rates in healthcare, affecting efficiency outcomes in the care process (Maglalang et al., 2021). The benefits of incorporating evidence-based strategies into addressing burnout among nurses include the use of best practices that enhance outcomes such as safety, quality and efficiency. It also leads to transformation of the existing organizational culture to ensure the prioritization of the nurses’ needs (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Therefore, burnout among nurses should be addressed, as it affects all aspects of healthcare including patient and nurse outcomes and achieving the set institutional goals and objectives.


Sources of evidence-based data such as journal articles and websites inform evidence-based strategies adopted to address burnout among nurses. However, specific criteria should be adopted when determining their credibility. The criteria include objectivity, relevance, currency, authority, and accuracy of the source of the information. The source should be written by experts in nursing field or healthcare. The information should be current to ensure its relevance to the issues that nurses experience in their practice. The objectivity should be considered since the source of information should be free of any bias (Dang et al., 2021). The source should also be relevant to nursing practice. It should address the crucial issues that contribute to burnout among nurses and potential solutions to the problem.


Studies have been conducted to determine the causes, risk factors, effects, and prevention of burnout among nurses. For example, a meta-analytic study conducted by Cañadas-De la Fuente et al., (2018) found that being divorced or single, male, and not having children were high predictors of burnout among nurses. A similar study identified risk factors to include lack of support and time and personnel conflicts increased burnout among nurse managers (Membrive-Jiménez et al., 2020). Maglalang et al., (2021) report that the effects of burnout include low quality care, errors in nursing care, job dissatisfaction, and high staff turnover. Suleiman-Martos et al., (2020) demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions such as mindfulness training on mitigating the effects of burnout in nursing. All these sources of evidence provide evidence-based information on the causes, effects, prevention, and management of burnout among nurses.

Evidence-Based Practice Model

A credible evidence-based practice model should be included in the implementation of strategies to address burnout among nurses. The Iowa model can be incorporated into the adopted strategies to prevent and manage burnout among nurses.
