This paper describes the standards for scientific study as a set of procedures and rules to advance scientific research, increase comprehension for scholar in social and behavioral fields (APA, 2009).  As a graduate student, these rules aid researchers in identifying key formatting points which promote exact research.

The American Psychological Association manual emphasizes that psychologists must carefully distinguish between the work of authors and their own research by properly citing the source of information garnered, as well as checking to see that all work is cited on the reference page. (APA,2009). The fore mentioned point is the most essential guideline for  researchers to follow for authentic research.

Considerations  learned :

  1. That the guidelines presented emphasized complete disclosure of information and quantitative data by ensuring that all work is cited in the text and on the reference page.
  1. Correctly citing the studies of researchers secures integrity in all research.  Ethical research gives credit to the source and is relayed free of bias.

APA level headers aid the researcher to properly organize the research (APA, 2009). In addition, researchers must check to ensure the latest edition of the guide is being utilized.  The researcher must properly cite sources to ensure all work used is listed in the reference page.

The manual stated that organizational aids included an ethical compliance checklist for the scientific community. The ethical principles of psychologists and code of conduct outlined standards for reporting and publishing information (APA, 2009).  The scientific method involved   must be verified by other researchers. VanderBos (2009) noted that studies benefit from this publication process when guidelines are followed.   Research entailing tests, surveys, interviews and video must be preserved in a form to confirm original intended findings of other researchers (VanderBos, 2009).

in this week’s resources incredibly helpful in preparing me to be successful as I pursue my Master’s degree. There were several components of APA format that were new to me as an academic writer, and it is clear I will need to be very conscientious as I begin to put this style into practice. Specifically, I will be cognizant of the technical aspects of APA format, be aware of bias in my writing, and citing work appropriately. In addition to adhering to APA format in my writing, it is important to maintain academic integrity by avoiding plagiarism. While there are several things I can do to prevent plagiarism, following APA style citation will play an important role in making sure I provide appropriate credit to sources I have utilized.

The technical aspects of APA format are extensive and detailed. Initially, I was surprised at how every component of the writing is addressed, for instance, margins, fonts, spacing, etc. However, as I continued to move through the resources this week it became clear that these standards lend themselves to uniformity across the field. Another aspect of APA discussed in American Psychological Association, “The basics of APA style” (2015), was “reducing bias in language”. This idea was further broken down into three guidelines. One of those guidelines that I found interesting was “acknowledge participation” (2015), which states that participants should be active rather than passive participants. The example given was to state that “students completed the survey instead of the survey was administered to students” (2015). I hadn’t thought about the importance of that language before. I feel that it is something that I will certainly use as I move through my degree program and into my career in health psychology. Lastly, the importance of citing work appropriately was discussed at length. Whether it be in text citation, or a full list of references provided at the end of a paper, this aspect of APA format will be essential in avoiding plagiarism.

I have not been in school for about 15 years, so it has been awhile since I have had to write academic papers. Fortunately, I think that APA style provides a writer with several ways to quote or reference other’s work while giving appropriate credit. I will work to avoid plagiarism by utilizing these skills. The presentation “Writing with integrity” (Henline, 2015), had some very helpful tips. One in particular was “don’t write with sources at your elbow”, (2015), which explained that you should read and highlight a source, but then put it away while you begin writing to avoid using someone else’s words as your own (2015). I tried this method for this assignment, and I feel it has been successful. Of course, I must refer to the source material for direct quotes and to double check my wording when I am explaining concept, but the rough draft was completed in this manner. In addition to this method, I will avoid plagiarism by using quotation marks and citing whenever I am using a direct quote, and I will use in text citation if I am paraphrasing an idea taken from another’s work.

The APA style is new to me as a writer and this assignment was a great opportunity to learn more about it. I look forward to writing academic papers using APA format and receiving feedback that will help me improve as I go through this course.

After I present my reflections on what the American Psychological Association (APA) standards of writing is, I will describe my thoughts on how to avoid plagiarism.

The APA style of writing is an organized body of rules and regulations as put forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020) to regulate the dissemination of knowledge accurately, clearly, and with integrity. Using this method maintains respect for the field of study that it represents and assures an authentic product. Substantiation and reproducibility are an integral part of scientific study (Brannon, 2018). My understanding is that the goal of APA writing is to maintain a standard level of substantiation and reproducibility throughout its publications. Through the standardized use of APA writing, colleagues can adhere to methods of research delineated through publications of one another with reliable results. The general population can better trust the information they encounter. And both groups can trace where the data originated and how it was concluded.

My goal is to become an organized thinker who produces innovative ideas of value and maintains the trust of those who read what I have written. To do this, I must always produce my own thoughts regarding a matter (Henline, B. (2015). Although it will be through incorporating the knowledge of others, it is necessary that I personally digest the material, analyze it for myself, and make my own conclusions. I can then legitimately put on paper the ideas I have formed from my own thoughts on the matter. My research and reading must be done prior to and away from my writing process. This will lessen the likelihood of plagiarism. Another imperative is to avoid the use of paraphrases by synthesizing information and producing an understanding of the text instead of using another author’s voice to explain something. If it becomes necessary to use a para phrase or quote, then proper documentation is needed. This leads to my final consideration in this discussion. Of utmost importance, is my task to develop APA writing skills such as proper citation and reference use.

In conclusion, APA style writing is a standard used in scientific, educational, and business communities to assure accuracy and legitimacy of work. Avoiding plagiarism in all its forms is necessary to be a credible participant in any of these venues.
