Introduction

Research plays a significant roles in various fields, nursing and health psychology included. However,  due to the fact that sometimes research may deal directly with human beings and their private and confidential data, it is important to focus on various aspects such as ethical considerations which entail a set of principles that guide the research designs, process and practice (Stark, 2019). Depending on the field where an individual would like to perform a research, these ethical considerations can differ. The implication is that the researcher needs to be well conversant with such considerations and take proactive steps and make intentional efforts to consider them during the research process (Armond et al.,2021). Therefore, this podcast focuses on the ethical issues related to conducting research in health psychology.

Ethical Ways to Conduct Research in Health Psychology

As earlier highlighted, research plays a significant role in knowledge creation. Research done in health psychology just like other fields require that the research perform the research ethically with the major intention of upholding the integrity and rights of the participants. Therefore, there are various ethical ways of conducting research in health psychology. One of the aspects to consider is ensuring that the participating individuals give informed consent to participate. It is usually given through a written agreement. It is also important to safeguard the participant’s important information through the use of strategies such as coding (Stark, 2019).. The research subject’s privacy should also be respect by ensuring that there is no unauthorized access to the information. It is also important to follow the principle of beneficence which means the benefits need to be maximized while the harm minimized.

The chosen population were nurses working in the care environment. This population usually suffer from burnout.

Burnout is a common problem experienced by many professionals at their places of work, including nurses. Burnout is usually characterized by lower personal achievements and accomplishments, depersonalization, and emotional exhaustion (Suleiman‐Martos et al.,2020). This problem is caused by various issues such as heavy workload, insufficient resources, administrative burden, and emotional stress. There are special considerations when working with this population. For example, there is a need to respect the boundaries and professional roles, implying that the research should not conflict with the nurses’ roles. The other special consideration is informed consent as there is a need to proceed with research after the nurses have agreed to participate. Scheduling flexibility should also be considered since nurses could be busy in the care environment at particular times. Others are respect for autonomy and confidentiality.

Ethical Issues

Nurse burnout is relevant to the field of health psychology since it revolves around the professional’s well-being, psychology, and healthcare. Burnout involves various psychological aspects, such as emotional exhaustion, psychological distress, and the development of various mental illness symptoms. In addition, it has various factors connected to it, such as stress and coping, patient outcomes and healthcare quality, and positive psychology and resilience. Burnout is relevant to both nurses and patients. Therefore, there are ethical issues to consider when conducting research on nurse burnout. One of them is informed consent. It is important to obtain consent from the participants (Stark, 2019). Confidentiality and privacy is also important so that nurses do not become victimized if for example, they talk about organizational factors leading to burnout. The other issue is respect for autonomy.
